Achieving Quality Care Means We Have to Roll Up Our Sleeves

As I looked up from my table, I saw Dan Marino, QB of the Miami Dolphins, across the room bellying up to the bar by himself grabbing a drink. It was 1990 and my cousin, Ray Pelletier, introduced me many of his clients including the resort and several of the area hotels. As we traversed through the hotels, Ray would walk up to the staff and asked if he owed them anything. People responded by pulling off one shoe and demonstrating to Ray that there was a penny in their shoe.

"I tell them to put the penny into their shoe to remind them of what we discussed during the training. If I run into them and they have a penny in their shoe, I give them a dollar," explained Ray.

Ray's business, January 1st, provided motivational speaking and business consulting. Ray told everyone that every day could be January 1st

, meaning that they could always have fresh start. At the peak of Ray's career, Viking Memory paid him nearly $1 million to be their spokesperson. Ray's most memorable accomplishment besides working with the Miami Dolphins and the Atlanta Braves was his motivational speech to Lou Holtz's Notre Dame team before the Fiesta Bowl helping them finish 12-0 and win the National Championship.

"Your cousin Ray is dead. He went in to the hospital for a routine procedure and something went wrong with the anesthesia and he died on the table during the procedure," my mother explained.

When I last saw Ray, I was either 20 or 21 years old and he was demonstrating a magic trick in a five star restaurant. He used magic to entertain his customers. Ray served as an inspiration to me as he was viewed as someone from our family that was successful. We were not the only family to suffer a tragedy due to a medical error. Thousands of families have loved ones die each year as a result of medical errors, the 2nd leading cause of death in the US. Ray left behind two wonderful children and a wife.

All of the technology elements required to deliver high quality care are available today, but often they not connected. Too frequently, hospitals deploy proprietary devices and systems that do not inter-operate.

At Dynamics Intelligence, we are building the healthcare system of the future, an intelligent system. Our system will connect R&D to clinical I0T and everything in between. We remember stories like Ray's to keep us motivated and to keep our eye on the prize, saving lives.
